Three Layers of Inquiry

The Principle
The Attention Coupling Academy operates across three distinct layers of inquiry. This distinction is not merely methodological — it is part of the Academy's identity. The Working Discipline requires that claims at each layer be clearly identified, and that evidence from one layer never silently be presented as proof of another.
The Three Layers
Scientific Evidence
What can be supported through neuroscience, cognitive psychology, network science, information theory, and Bayesian reasoning. Claims at this level are empirical and testable. The Academy draws on these disciplines as frameworks, not as authorities — the relationship is one of productive analogy, not subordination.
Examples: attention as selective processing, Bayesian belief updating, network emergence properties, cognitive filtering mechanisms.
Homeric / Textual Evidence
What the Odyssey actually depicts — the episodes, the structure, the narrative patterns. This layer is grounded in close reading of the text itself. The Academy's philosophical vocabulary is drawn from this layer, but the text itself does not argue for the philosophical positions the Academy develops from it.
Examples: Odysseus's encounters in Books 9–24, the structure of the return journey, the narrative pattern of capture and release.
Philosophical / Metaphysical Interpretation
The interpretive layer where the Academy develops its philosophical positions — Attention Coupling, F(A), the relationship between attention and creation, the nature of Eros and Athena as cognitive functions. This is where the Academy's most original work occurs, and where the Working Discipline demands the most caution.
Examples: the Attention Coupling model, the Eros–Athena hypothesis, the relationship between mythic narrative and cognitive architecture.
How the Layers Relate
The Academy's research becomes stronger when these three layers are connected without pretending that evidence from one layer automatically proves claims in another. The connection between layers is the Academy's contribution — not the claim that any single layer is sufficient.
This is why the Working Discipline insists on the distinction. A Homeric reading that borrows the authority of cognitive science without acknowledgment is not scholarship — it is rhetoric. A philosophical claim that presents itself as textual evidence is not analysis — it is advocacy.
The Methodological Commitment
Every page of the Academy's public work should be readable through this lens: Which layer is this claim operating in? What would it take to support it at that layer? And what would it take to bridge it to another layer?
Where the bridge is incomplete — where the scientific analogy is suggestive but not proven, where the Homeric reading is illuminating but not unique, where the philosophical position is stimulating but not established — the gap should be named honestly.
