Evidence

Working Discipline

The Working Discipline is the Academy's foundational commitment to intellectual honesty. It is not a technical feature — it is the Academy's identity.

The Three Kinds of Claim

This project separates three kinds of claims:

Evidence

Evidence

What can be directly supported through research, texts, or observation. Claims at this level are traceable to specific sources and can be verified against the record.

Interpretation

Interpretation

A synthesis or reading derived from the corpus. Interpretations may guide inquiry without pretending to be proof. They are honest readings, not established facts.

Hypothesis

Hypothesis

A proposed explanation whose ontological or empirical status remains unresolved. Useful models that still need testing and refinement. They should be treated as hypothesis-generating processes, not proof.

Intellectual Safeguards

The following principles govern how the Academy presents its work publicly. They are adapted from the Academy's internal research methodology and rewritten for the general reader.

On certainty

The Academy does not claim mystical or metaphysical certainty merely because its framework uses mythic language. Homer's poetry is a lens, not a revelation. Symbolic interpretation is not empirical proof.

On pattern

The Academy does not manufacture hidden patterns to satisfy a desire for coherence. If a pattern is observed, it should be tested against independent evidence. Compulsive pattern-seeking is a failure of the filtering function the Academy studies.

On precision

One precise question is worth more than ten decorative interpretations. The smallest useful intervention is preferred over grand advice. When the evidence is insufficient, uncertainty is preserved rather than resolved.

On analogy

Not every situation should be forced into a Homeric analogy. The Odyssey provides a framework, not a universal template. Where the framework does not apply, the Academy says so.

On interpretation

Not every situation can be forced into a single interpretive framework. The Academy recognises that some situations may not fit the model, and that forcing an fit produces distortion rather than insight.

On diagnosis

The Academy does not diagnose psychological or medical conditions. Its framework is philosophical, not clinical. When a situation requires professional expertise, the Academy defers to qualified practitioners.

On agency

The Academy preserves the reader's own agency. It offers a framework for thinking, not a prescription for acting. The reader is responsible for applying or rejecting the Academy's suggestions in their own life.

On absence

The absence of an answer is itself part of the Working Discipline. Where the Academy has not yet developed a position, the gap is marked honestly rather than filled with invention.

"The goal is not to close the question too quickly. The goal is to build a clear, rigorous, and imaginative body of work around attention and its role in human experience."
